A New Space for a Growing Mission
For nearly two decades, The River Food Pantry has been a vital resource for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity in Dane County. As demand for its services continued to grow, so did the need for a facility capable of serving more neighbors with greater efficiency, accessibility, and dignity.
Through its $12 million Recipe for Hope capital campaign, The River made that vision a reality. Its new 32,500-square-foot facility on Madison's Northside offers nearly three times the space of its previous location, with expanded food preparation and storage, a commercial kitchen, and an innovative indoor drive-through that makes accessing groceries safer and more convenient.
Behind this remarkable expansion was a team deeply committed to The River's mission.
Spolar Studio had the opportunity to collaborate with a dedicated team at The River Food Pantry to create a donor recognition wall celebrating the generosity that helped make the new facility possible. Working closely with the organization's leadership, development, and design teams, we created a recognition experience that reflected their shared vision and commitment to the community.
Alongside this project, we developed a complementary volunteer recognition wall honoring the individuals who continue to give their time in support of The River's mission.
Recognition That Feels Like The River
From our earliest conversations, one thing was clear: this recognition wall needed to feel unmistakably like The River Food Pantry.
Our goal was to create something that reflected the organization's identity, expressed genuine gratitude, and felt at home within the new facility. Just as importantly, the team wanted the design to be colorful, approachable, and full of life.
We embraced that direction by developing custom illustrations inspired by the fresh produce and foods The River provides to its community. These colorful elements brought warmth and personality to the design while creating a direct visual connection to the organization's everyday work.
The result is a donor recognition wall that celebrates generosity without losing sight of what that generosity makes possible.
Rather than treating recognition as a standalone feature, we approached it as an extension of The River's brand, mission, and welcoming environment.
Honoring the People
Who Show Up
While the donor recognition wall celebrates the financial support behind The River's expansion, the volunteer recognition wall tells an equally important story.
The River's volunteers are an essential part of its mission. Their dedication, generosity, and countless hours of service help keep the organization moving forward.
We wanted to create a system that recognized their ongoing contributions while remaining practical for The River to manage.
Our solution was a custom rail-based recognition system that allows volunteer plaques to move between recognition levels as individuals reach new service milestones.
When a volunteer advances to a new hour category, The River's team can simply reposition their existing plaque. No replacement materials, outside labor, or additional fabrication are required.
New plaques are provided as volunteers reach the initial 200-hour recognition milestone, but subsequent advancements can be managed internally at no additional cost.
For existing volunteers, moving to a new recognition level costs The River $0.
This was an intentional design decision. For an organization whose resources are dedicated to serving its community, ongoing maintenance costs matter.
By creating a flexible, easy-to-update system, we helped ensure that recognition could continue to grow alongside The River's incredible and dedicated volunteer community without creating unnecessary expenses.
Thoughtful Design. Lasting Impact.
Donor and volunteer recognition should do more than acknowledge names. It should reflect the values of the organization, celebrate the people behind its success, and function effectively for years to come.
For The River, that meant balancing visual expression with practical considerations: a colorful, brand-driven donor wall and an adaptable volunteer recognition system designed with long-term affordability in mind.
Both solutions were shaped by the same guiding principle: every design decision should support the organization's mission.
